Types of Welding Rods

Welding | May 23, 2023

Welding rods, also known as filler rods, are an essential component in welding as they play a critical role in connecting two pieces of metal together. Since welding rods are made of various materials, there are several different types of welding rods available in the market for you to choose from. At LWS Manufacturing & Welding, we know that choosing the right one for your welding project is essential. That is why we have put together some information about the different types of welding rods and their uses based on our extensive experience.

1. Mild Steel Welding Rods

Mild steel welding rods are the most commonly used welding rods. They are ideal for welding low-carbon steel and have a high penetration rate, making them perfect for welding thicker metals. They are cost-effective and easy to use, making them ideal for beginners.

2. Stainless Steel Welding Rods

Stainless steel welding rods are used for welding stainless steel and other high alloy steels. They are corrosion-resistant and have a higher melting point, making them perfect for welding in high-temperature environments. Stainless steel welding rods are also used in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

3. Aluminum Welding Rods

Aluminum welding rods are used for welding aluminum and aluminum alloys. They are lightweight, and their low melting point makes them perfect for welding thin aluminum sheets. They are also corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor applications.

4. Cast Iron Welding Rods

Cast iron welding rods are specially formulated to produce a strong and durable weld. They are also known as nickel-iron welding rods and are ideal for repairing cast iron objects such as engine blocks and exhaust manifolds.

5. Tungsten Welding Rods

Tungsten welding rods are used for tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. They are made up of almost pure tungsten and are perfect for welding thin metals such as aluminum and stainless steel. Tungsten welding rods have a high melting point, making them perfect for high-temperature applications.

6. Flux-Cored Welding Rods

Flux-cored welding rods are used for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). They are made of hollow wire with a flux core, making them ideal for welding thick metals. Flux-cored welding rods do not require an external shielding gas, making them ideal for mobile outdoor welding.
